C4IR Serbia Leads World Economic Forum Bioeconomy Initiative

On Thursday, March 28, 2024, the World Economic Forum launched the Steering Committee for its newest Bioeconomy Initiative. Among its members is Jelena Bojović, Head of the Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution in Serbia, alongside leading experts in the field.

This pioneering initiative was launched at the end of 2023, marking a significant step towards sustainable development and economic transformation. It serves as the foundation for advancing the frontiers of biotechnology and establishing a thriving bioeconomy. As part of the World Economic Forum’s global C4IR network, C4IR Serbia stands as leader of this forward-thinking initiative.

Aligned with the World Economic Forum’s flagship initiative, “Accelerating the Global Transition to a Biobased Economy”, the Bioeconomy Initiative aims to foster dialogue, collaboration, and innovation across industries and economies. It recognizes the imperative to unlock and scale up the commercial, economic, and environmental potential of the bioeconomy – a sector spanning healthcare, energy, chemicals, agriculture, and consumer goods.

Serbia has taken the lead in the Forum’s Initiative while paving its own way for a bio-based economy, focusing on data, infrastructure, and knowledge. The activities of the C4IR in Serbia revolve around data, legislation, and infrastructure for its secure storage and responsible use, building grounds for the development of data-driven bio-solutions and setting the stage for a new biotech and bioeconomy path in Serbia.

On March 28, 2024, the World Economic Forum launched the Steering Committee of the initiative, of which Jelena Bojović, Head of C4IR Serbia, is a part. The Steering Committee is dedicated to shaping the agenda, outcomes, and best solutions by addressing barriers to commercialization and scaling, raising awareness among senior leaders and the public, and promoting equitable development across sectors in the coming period. Furthermore, C4IR Serbia plays a crucial role in the initiative, leading the policy working group.

It is worth to highlight that the workshop of the World Economic Forum Bioeconomy Workshop within the Biotech Future Forum 2023, held in Belgrade last year, marked the initial phase of introducing this Initiative. This gathering provided a strategic platform, fostering profound discussions and incubating innovative concepts to enrich and propel the Bioeconomy Initiative into its next phase.

Stay tuned for more details about the initiative and C4IR Serbia’s pivotal role, coming soon.
