The Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution of Serbia, in cooperation with the Ministry of Science, Technological Development, and Innovation of the Government of the Republic of Serbia, recorded a series of video materials during the second International Conference Biotech Future Forum. These videos aim to showcase the potential of Serbia and its domestic institutions in the field of biotechnology. The series comprises ten institutions, highlighting their most significant achievements and innovative solutions.
Faculty of Biology, University of Belgrade
The Faculty of Biology of the University of Belgrade presented their work on neonatal screening for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) in newborns and the achievements of the Center for Human Molecular Genetics.
Institute for Information Technologies (IIT) and the Faculty of Engineering, University of Kragujevac
Representatives of the Institute for Information Technologies and the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Kragujevac spoke about the development of software based on artificial intelligence utilized in healthcare and application of the renowned organ-on-a-chip technology.
BioSense Institute
The BioSense Institute presented the Plant-O-Meter, an innovative optical device capable of accurately determining the health and conditions of plants not visible to the human eye. Additionally, they introduced the new Nano Center, which utilizes advanced technologies, including a scanning electron microscope of exceptional performance boasting a resolution in nanometers.
Vinča Institute of Nuclear Sciences
Representatives of the Vinča Institute of Nuclear Sciences discussed their research projects and the development of innovative medical devices targeting the early identification of heart defects. This aims to detect and prevent heart attacks, one of the leading causes of death in our country. Additionally, they highlighted the operations of the Radioisotope Laboratory, a unique center in Serbia registered by the Ministry of Health for the production of radiopharmaceuticals.
Institute of Molecular Genetics and Genetic Engineering, University of Belgrade
In front of the Institute of Molecular Genetics and Genetic Engineering (IMGGE), representatives showcased groundbreaking efforts in creating an innovative probiotic for domestic animals. The video illustrates IMGGE’s approach to addressing crucial social and environmental issues through the application of bacteria and chemistry.
Institute for the Application of Nuclear Energy
Representatives of the Institute for the Application of Nuclear Energy (INEP) spoke about the Institute’s revolutionary work in the application of extracellular vesicles, as well as the development and closed production of immunodiagnostic tests, which have been applied across biomedicine, veterinary medicine, and food safety sectors.
Research and Development Institute for Artificial Intelligence of Serbia
In front of the Research and Development Institute for Artificial Intelligence of Serbia, Dr. Branka Rakić presented the Institute’s work, particularly highlighting the Group for AI in Health and Life Sciences. Their primary focus areas encompass the development of AI tools for health and diagnostics, alongside leveraging artificial intelligence in the exploration of new biomarkers and the design of therapeutics.
Faculty of Technology and Metallurgy, Institute of Chemistry, Technology and Metallurgy, and the Faculty of Chemistry, University of Belgrade
The video represents the Faculty of Technology and Metallurgy, Institute of Chemistry, Technology and Metallurgy, and the Faculty of Chemistry, University of Belgrade. Representatives from the Faculty of Technology and Metallurgy discussed their involvement in the ExcellMater project focusing on biomaterials engineering, as well as how they use dark chocolate to enhance human cognitive functions. The Institute of Chemistry, Technology and Metallurgy showcased its spin-offs dedicated to enhancing people’s quality of life and their studies in environmental protection using biotechnology. The Faculty of Chemistry showcased its development of a ‘healthy’ beer designed to support the immune system and presented their work in diagnostics and immunotherapy for allergic diseases.
The series was developed as part of C4IR Serbia’s new initiative focusing on technology transfer, aiming to promote the Republic of Serbia’s potential in biotechnology.
